Mr John McHugo
John McHugo is a partner in Trowers & Hamlins’ International Department. He joined the firm in 1980 and qualified as a solicitor in 1982.
International Law
John is an authority on various international law issues relating to the Middle East. In particular, his legal analysis of UN Security Council Resolution 242 and his work on title to territory issues in international law are highly regarded. He was listed as counsel for the State of Bahrain at the International Court of Justice in 1994.
Arabic
John studied Arabic at Oxford University and the American University in Cairo before joining Trowers & Hamlins and qualifying as a solicitor. He is one of the few native English speaking lawyers who are completely at home with legal documentation in the Arabic language.
Cairo Liaison Partner
John is Liaison Partner in London for the firm’s Cairo Office and a regular visitor to Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries. In addition to his international law interests, he specialises in investment law and has coordinated legal due diligence on project financings in Egypt.
He is a director of the Arab British Chamber of Commerce, member of the steering committee of the Egyptian British Business Council, a former Chairman of the Middle East Association and a former honorary visiting fellow at the Scottish Centre for International Law at Edinburgh University.
