Standards & Safety Regulations
In order for a product manufactured outside the EU to be sold in any member state, it may be necessary for that product to be tested to see if it complies with safety and other regulations.
Industrial standards, whether for safety, reliability or efficiency, are gradually being harmonised across Europe so that products can legally be sold in any EU country.
In some cases compliance with a specific standard is not a legal requirement but a practical one, since poor quality products will simply not find a market. For advice on standards, contact the British Standards Institute who set and test standards in the UK and who work with their European counterparts to establish common European standards (see Useful Addresses).
